Hawaiians were master navigators and used stars as a way to navigate the vast Pacific Ocean. There are four major main sky lines that wayfinders use to navigate: Ke Kā o Makali‘i (“The Canoe-Bailer of Makali‘i”), Iwikuamo‘o (“Backbone”), Manaiakalani (“The Chief’s Fishline”) and Ka Lupe o Kawelo (“The Kite of Kawelo”).
This longsleeve depicts Ke Kā o Makali‘i, identified by its curvature resembling a canoe bailer. This sky line is most visible during the winter, Ho’oilo, from November to April. This skyline holds the constellations of Orion (Ka Hei-hei o Nā Keiki) and Taurus. Check out the back of the garment for the Hawaiian star names.
