In order of date of birth, these Hawaiian women were all important figures in Hawaii’s monarchy and history. Ka’ahumanu one of Kamehameha I’s favorite wives helped him to unify the islands and worked to overcome kapu or taboo put on women. Princess Ruth Ke'elikōlani was one of the most wealthy women in Hawaii and largest land holders; when the Hawaiian language was threatened to be taken over by the English language she only did business in her native tongue. Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop set up the trust that is the Kamehameha Schools which to this day provides education to Native Hawaiian children. Queen Kapiolani, wife of Kalākaua, established The Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children which still serves Hawaii today. Queen Emma is credited with founding Queen’s Hospital to serve native Hawaiians as well as the St. Andrew’s Priory School for girls, both still intact today. Lili’uokalani was the last monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom and fought nobly to save the Kingdom of Hawaii from illegal annexation to the U.S.A. even being imprisoned in her own home. Ka’iulani was the promising heir apparent to Lili’uokalani who was educated in England, unfortunately she passed at the age of 23.
